Elafonisi beach - Crete Island | SunRise Car Rentals

One of Crete’s most remote places Elafonisi tends to be one of the most famous as well. In case you haven’t heard of Elafonisi before, it’s enlisted almost every year among the 25 best beaches in Europe and of the best in the world.

Elafonisi is located 74km southwest of Chania and today it’s a massive attraction. Thousands of people come daily to view this spectacular beach, so if you are not comfortable with crowded places think twice before you go, especially during July and August. Still you will be able to find with a bit of luck some quiet coves.

Many people mistake Elafonisi for the beach, but it’s actually the name of the island across the beach. The water is so shallow that you can practically walk from the beach to the islet and your knees won’t get wet. 

Why Elafonisi beach sand is pink?

Another characteristic that distinguishes this beach from the others is the extraordinary pink colored sand. Many small pieces of broken shells contained in the sand are the reason the beach is some places has pinkish color.

The waters are crystal clear turquoise giving you the impression that you in a Caribbean paradise.

The beach is organized in scattered places offering sunbeds, umbrellas and there’s a cantine as well. Luckily, the area has under Natura 2000 protection for the last years and the beach hasn’t been exploited.

If you wish to explore the islet of Elafonisi you want find any beach, but you will be able to visit a small chapel dedicated to St. Irene and the memorial cave.

Another place worth visiting in the nearby area, is Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, located 6km north of Elafonisi beach.

Access

Driving from Chania city takes about 1hr 30minif you choose the route from Elos village. You can also go by bus, by boat (from Palaiochora) or with an organized tour.
